Tackling New Year’s Resolutions with EMDR Therapy

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? If you do, you are in good company. This is a popular way to ring in the new year.

Often times, people make New Year’s Resolutions to help them modify areas of their life that they have been wanting to change for months or sometimes years!

Planning for 2020

How would you like things to be different in 2020? Are you hoping to finally clean out the garage, exercise more or spend more time out socially with friends or family? Maybe you have a trip that has been on your bucket list for way too long and you think this is the year that you are going to make it happen.

Many times, these types of activities don’t get accomplished because we have had a bad experience in the past, we lack motivation or some part of it is rooted in fear. Here’s a great example. Imagine that you have always wanted to go to Hawaii, but you are afraid to travel across the water. Since Hawaii is an island you have no choice but to travel by plane or boat. However, because you had a bad experience with flying and have never been a fan of boats, you miss out on that great experience. This stops you from fully enjoying your life.

EMDR has been successfully used to decrease fear, conquer phobias, increase motivation and address triggers that hold you back from following through on your goals. An EMDR therapist can help you address issues that have been holding you back from living the life that you want to live, rather than being trapped or feeling stuck.

EMDR is also extremely versatile, allowing it to be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to address current issues such as low self-confidence in a group setting or anxiety while driving or going out socially. Working on these issues can help you spend more time connecting and less time feeling anxious.

EMDR can also be used to prepare you for a good experience with an upcoming future activity. Some examples would be going on a first date with someone new, feeling calm and confident during a job interview or successfully following through on a new exercise routine or healthy eating plan. This is great way to build positive feelings and preparation for an upcoming activity.

A third use for EMDR therapy is to work on negative experiences from the past. An example of this would be the negative flying experience from the ‘Hawaii’ example mentioned earlier in this post. Addressing these issues can reduce or eliminate the triggers or negative responses that are holding you back.

Sometimes people create a New Year’s Resolution that gets continued from year to year because there are obstacles in the way of achieving their goal. So in 2020, if you will be making a New Year’s Resolution, pick something that you think will give you greater satisfaction or enjoyment in your life. Then, focus on obstacles that have gotten in your way in the past so you can be more successful this time.

I hope this provides a little more information on how EMDR therapy could be used to help you create the life you want. Whether you make a New Year’s Resolution or not, have a wonderful 2020 and  cross a couple things off your bucket list this year!
